Fitzrovia for foodies – where to eat in the area

Fitzrovia in general, and Charlotte Street in particular, has become something of a destination for dining, renowned for culinary variety.

Fitzrovia for foodies

For the last three years, Charlotte Street has hosted Feast@Fitzrovia, a summer food festival. Stall after stall selling all manner of delectable dishes and drinks line up along the street, restaurants open their doors and join the party come rain or shine, while chefs battle it out in a cook-off, demonstrating their enviable culinary skills for wide-eyed passers-by.

Fitzrovia’s food scene is diverse. This relatively small and historically bohemian district stretches from Tottenham Court Road (soon to be served by Crossrail) and extends to Euston Road, skirting London’s West End. If you live or work in Fitzrovia, or are planning to live or work in the area, or if you’re just visiting for the day and want to form an idea of where to eat and what there is on offer for the self-confessed foodie, hear us out. Whether you’re out for breakfast, lunch, or dinner in Fitzrovia, we’ve brought together a varied list of places for you to try.

Lantana Café Fitzrovia

Formerly the recipient of Time Out’s Best New Café in London award, Lantana is still putting a smile on the face of its customers. Known for its silky-smooth lattes and inventive brunch menus, this is the perfect place for a weekday or weekend breakfast. From the ‘pulled pork drowned eggs’ to the orange and rhubarb French toast, Lantana is the perfect way to start the day. It’s not exactly cheap, but it’s always worth it.

Clipstone

The sister restaurant to nearby Portland, Clipstone, rather appropriately, sits on the corner of Clipstone Street. The homemade sourdough alone makes it worth a visit, but stick around for longer and we suggest you indulge in the ‘cold cuts and crudos’ and the ‘young leeks tempura’ if lunching or dining. There is also a ‘leave it up to us’ feasting menu, not to be missed.

Roka

Something of a Charlotte Street institution, this award-winning venue serves up Japanese food at its best and most refreshing. The menu is inspired, and every dish a treat for the taste buds. The atmosphere is casual and intimate, and the service accommodating.

Foley’s

Chef Mitz Vora (former Sous Chef at The Palomar) is at the helm of this establishment, where almost every dish is a celebration of the wonders of spice. The offering is streamlined, making it easier to decide what to order. Dishes range from grilled octopus and black sesame mayonnaise to sticky beef with ‘Tibetan potato puree’ and ‘chicken lollipops’.

Herman ze German

Come lunchtime, this small deli specialising in German wurst sausages, will be battling to keep the queue size to a minimum. It’s a popular place. Found on the now-legendary Charlotte Street, hungry workers from nearby offices flock here come 1pm. Despite its popularity, we recommend popping in for a hearty meal of German sausage, crispy onions, and a singularly tasty spiced ketchup.

It’s sad to note that Dabbous, one of Fitzrovia’s best-loved venues, is to close this month as the owners move on to a new venture, but in Fitzrovia, culinary competition is fierce, and this keeps every deli/cafe/restaurant owner on their toes. It also keeps the area alive with food-related activity, and there’s always a new café to sit at, a new eatery to try.
