Seven of the best streets to buy property in North West London

Sleek and modern yet full of original charm, accessible and vibrant while undeniably opulent – the North West of London is unique. For savvy property investors, this part of the capital is a dream; but with so much choice and appeal, it’s also highly sought after.

Picking the best streets to buy property here is a bit like trying to pick your seven favourite Beatles songs; everyone has a preference, but at the end of the day there aren’t many bad ones, so the choice is particularly difficult. After some deliberation, here are seven of what we feel are the best North West London streets to invest in. See if you agree.

Charles Street, Mayfair

We’ve all played Monopoly and experienced the fear that arrives when you approach the purples at the end of an otherwise successful trip around the board – especially if there are hotels on them. Ask those unfamiliar with London where the nicest (and most expensive) homes are in the capital and many will tell you Mayfair.

House prices here can soar into the multimillions. A one-bedroom apartment can fetch £715,000, while in May 2014 telegraph.co.uk reported that the average asking price for a house in Mayfair is £3.31 million. Property here is not likely to decrease in value -prices have inflated heavily in Mayfair over the past four decades and show no sign of slowing down.

Charles Street is one of London’s most exclusive addresses, hosting a plethora of Grade II listed townhouses just a stone’s throw away from Berkeley Square Gardens. Property is pricey but it’s a lavish investment that is almost guaranteed to make you a return.

Berkeley Square, Mayfair

Staying close by, property on Berkeley Square overlooking the Gardens offers stunning views and luxurious surroundings, from the Rolls Royce showroom to upmarket art galleries. Whether you’re after a seven-bed townhouse or an exceptional one-bed flat, this prestigious address in the heart of Mayfair makes for a smart investment.

Berkeley Square is surrounded by restaurants and venues of the highest quality, so it’s no surprise that many properties here have a history with royalty and celebrities.

Baker Street, Marylebone

As one of the most famous streets in the city, you don’t have to be a detective to know that Baker Street is home to some breathtaking property. Moments from Regent’s Park, The Sherlock Holmes Museum, Madame Tussauds and more, on Baker Street there’s never a dull moment.

That’s not to say the area isn’t also quiet and reserved – Marylebone’s Baker Street residents love it here. We’re sure you will too.

Marylebone High Street

Running sub-parallel with Baker Street is the rather fashionable Marylebone high street. This stretch has been described as a “haven in the middle of the frantic city”, a “hidden wonder of the West End” and was even voted the ‘best street in London’ by BBC Radio 4 listeners.

Most of the period buildings date from 1900 and prices have soared in the area. Saying that, one can still find some beautiful two-bed apartments right on the High Street for under £700,000. The convenience of being surrounded by unique boutique shops, restaurants and bars is a quality of Marylebone High Street that no resident takes for granted. With Oxford Street, Bond Street and Regent’s Park nearby, this is a fantastic street to invest in property.

Blomfield Road, Maida Vale

An exquisite location overlooking the canal, Blomfield Road sits in the centre of picturesque Maida Vale. The area is known for its wide streets, like the adjacent Warwick Avenue, communal greens such as the gorgeous Little Venice Gardens, and spacious mansion flats.

Although Blomfield Road presents a semblance of great wealth, many flats are less expensive than they would be if they were in other areas. You can find some wonderful one-bed apartments for around £500,000, with no compromise to quality or location. Indeed, the popular tourist attraction of Little Venice – with its narrowboat canal cruises and excellent bars and restaurants – is a pocket of tranquillity that’s only going to become more desirable to property investors in the future.

Rupert Street, Soho

Rupert Street is a cobbled gem in a vibrant area that has changed a lot from the seedy reputation it garnered in the 1960s and 70s. Now the home to fashionable shops, upmarket restaurants and London’s media world, Rupert Street’s surrounding area of Soho has become classy and high-end without losing its fun-loving nature.

An increasing number of flats in this prime location are popping up on the market, and with so much going for it it’s hardly surprising that interest from property buyers is growing. With Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square within comfortable strolling distance, Rupert Street and its many converted period buildings is a great place to invest.

The Water Gardens, Bayswater

Almost all of the luxurious apartments in Bayswater’s Water Gardens have been refurbished to a ridiculously high standard, without losing any of their original charm. Hyde Park and the Marble Arch is just a short walk away, while many great restaurants, bars and shops – as well the Grosvenor Casino if you fancied a flutter – are practically on your doorstep.

The Water Gardens is a 24/7 portered development off Edgware Road; not technically a street, but worthy of this list none the less. Its lavish apartments come with an asking price hovering around the £1,350,000 mark, but many are worth every penny. The popularity of the buildings, not to mention the quality of the surrounding area, is on the rise, and so the decision to buy property here is not likely to be one you’d regret.

We can only apologise if we’ve left your street off this list; as we said, it was hard enough just settling on seven. Areas including St John’s Wood, Primrose Hill, Camden and Fitzrovia also have wonderful properties on terrific streets that would make for fantastic investments.

If you’re now also debating your favourite Beatles tracks, have a look on Abbey Road. You might find a song, or property, you love.
