Tenants will pay more to share with a ‘good flatmate’

70% of house and flat sharers in the UK are willing to pay over £100 more on average a month to live with good flatmates.

According to new research commissioned by Spark Energy, tidiness and cleanliness is the most important quality in a flat or housemate. Some tenants polled even said they would pay up to around £200 to secure a clean, tidy housemate who does the dishes.

The research also revealed that women prefer sharing with two other people, while men prefer sharing with three other housemates.

Spark Energy also touched on a growing trend among tenants when it comes to looking for others to rent with. Half the number of tenants think that the best way to meet potential housemates is by getting to know each other face to face, as opposed to via a digital platform.

In addition, only 18% of tenants included in the study believe they will never make it onto the housing ladder.

For many tenants, particularly in London, renting for longer is becoming more commonplace. This is partly due to a lack of affordable homes to buy.

High rents, and the possibility of renting for longer, is leading to a shift of priorities for tenants. As well as making tenants more picky about who they share a property with, tenants are increasingly keen to make their own home improvements to their rental properties.
